East Africa Cooperatives seek autonomy

East African Farmers’ cooperatives could soon be able to form joint ventures with their pears across the region if a new bill developed by regional cooperative lobby passes through.

Eastern Africa farmers federation said the common law for cooperatives when approved by East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) will help spur growth of small and medium enterprises and enhance regional integration.

“The merger will assist such cooperatives conduct a joint procurement to save on costs, open up the market and more opportunities for farmers,” said the federation’s Chief executive officer, Steve Muchiri.
