Coca-Cola Beverages Africa-Kenya (CCBA) has donated Sh 12.7 million to Kenya Red Cross Society to support over 22,800 households affected by recent floods in the country.

The support will be used to provide relief and meet both immediate and early recovery needs in the areas most affected including Tana River, Kisumu and Narok for the next three months.

“The March-May rainfall displaced at least 46,149 households (230,754  people) countrywide. Many of these people are still living in 235 Camps  while many more lost their farms and livestock. These displacements were also coming on the back of the October-November- December rains in which some of these same people had been affected so recovery for them will take some time. Through this partnership, many households will be able to regain their lost livelihood,” said Dr. Asha Mohammed, Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The support will be used to provide displaced households with non-food items including dignity kits that will be issued to both men and women. The kits include menstrual hygiene commodities, undergarments, and soap.

These items will enhance the dignity of the affected communities and provide a conducive environment for improved living conditions.

“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the floods have been a major setback to many households. This donation will enable the Kenya Red Cross to provide immediate humanitarian relief to restore the dignity and strengthen the safety of these communities towards longer term recovery,” said Xavier Selga, Managing Director, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa – Kenya.

Kenya Red Cross will also use the support to rehabilitate water infrastructure damaged by floods in select counties.
