The current move to double relief handout by the government is ironical and uncalled for especially in the face of impending grim food outlook.
It is disheartening to hear, see and read in our national media adults who could be somewhere working trooping for relief food year in year out. It is further degrading and boring to hear the government declaring hunger a national disaster after every two years while our so called leaders indulge in empty rhetoric at the expense of development initiatives.
The current move to double the quantity of maize and beans implies that more is needed but with the shortage we are experiencing relying on donors remain our only option to save the lives at risk.
It will be in bad light to see our country seeking appeal for donations even after donating a hefty amount to Japan a country richer than Kenya.
The way the government juggles with funds and issues of food security can be described as indiscriminate distribution of resources. From the shuttle diplomacy funds, ferrying of forty Mps to accompany the Ocampo six to the Hague, the current donations to Japan, the recently embezzled Fpe funds and doubling of relief handout can be attributable to lack of strategy and self centeredness of relevant officials.
With the right strategies the government efforts to avert the disaster should be seen in initiating developmental projects like dams, agricultural practices and awareness creation on how to contain the crisis in the hunger stricken regions while improving the existing reserves.
