Equity bank’s mobile network service, Equitel has gained 1.9 percent in mobile subscription numbers showing it has eaten into other providers share, with a measly rise in overall subscription rates.
Latest Communications Authority report covering January to March showed Airtel lost its market share with a bigger margin of 2.4 percent to post 20.2 percent, while Safaricom’s market share stood at 67.1 percent, declining by 0.3 percent.
The statistics however reported Orange Telkom gained 0.8 percent to post 10.8 percent in market share.
“The entry into the market by the MVNO shows that there is still potential for growth and further competition in the mobile sub sector,” said CA report.
A third quarter report covering January to March showed that Equitel, which runs on rival operators’ infrastructure to relay its services curved out a 1.9 percent share of the total mobile subscriptions to register 665,661 subscribers against a 3.6 percent growth in overall subscriptions to 34.8 million recorded by December 2014.
